What This Course Is About And What You Will Learn!

Marcos Beccari lends his expertise to develop your understanding of figurative watercolor painting, whether you're a novice or an experienced artist. This workshop imparts specific techniques and skills that Marcos has honed over his successful career as a watercolor artist and university art instructor. This course emphasizes an understanding of the entire painting process, helping you achieve consistent realism in your portraits.

What's Included in our Workshop with Marcos Beccari?

Materials and Tools for Watercolor Painting: Marcos emphasizes the importance of choosing the right materials, such as paints, brushes, and papers. He recommends 100% cotton paper for its durability and ability to handle multiple layers of paint. He advises using a large drawing board with an adjustable tilt for comfort and ease of painting. All of his suggested materials help to make the painting process easier, giving you a headstart before you even begin painting.

Painting Techniques: Marcos discusses various watercolor techniques, including wet-on-wet, dry-on-dry, layering, and the use of masking fluid for preserving white spaces. He emphasises the importance of planning the painting process, considering how the colors and layers will interact.

Understanding Color and Light: Marcos talks in detail about color theory, explaining primary, secondary, and complementary colors. He explains how to effectievly use the color wheel inorder to create harmonious color schemes, and emphasizes the importance of understanding light sources to create depth and dimension in your paintings.

Drawing Principles for Watercolor: He covers basic drawing principles directed towards watercolor painting, such as shapes, tonal values, and edges. He demonstrates these principles through quick, simple exercises, such as drawing a sphere and translating these principles to more complex subjects.

Layering Logic in Watercolor: Marcos introduces his approach to layering in watercolor painting, which he terms as 'Tea, Milk, and Honey'. This approach helps you to easily remember and understand the varying consistencies of paint and water mixtures used in different stages of the painting process, from light washes (tea) to more concentrated pigments (honey).

Practical Demonstrations: Throughout the workshop, Marcos demonstrates practical examples, including graphite,  monochromatic and full color watercolor studies. He gives detailed explanations of how he approaches each stage of a painting, from initial sketches to final details, and shares his photo references so that you can paint along with him.

General Recommendations and Tips: Marcos offers general advice on watercolor painting, such as being economical with strokes, not obsessing over details in the drawing phase, and resisting the temptation to continuously correct the painting. He encourages embracing mistakes as part of the learning process.

Sharing Experience and Learning: He concludes by emphasising the importance of sharing experiences, learning from each other, and keeping an updated database of visual references for study and inspiration. Through this workshop's community page you will have the option to share your paintings and progress with other students, giving you the opportunity to share ideas and receive feedback.

I learned so much during this course it felt like a whole new world opened up to me! A lot of it was really basic stuff such as how you do layers, what angle the paper should be in, how you’re supposed to always work from top to bottom etcetera. But to me it was really useful as no one has explained this to me before. The pdf was also amazingly helpful. I’m really excited to get going with my next project and utilize all that I’ve learnt. Thank you! I hope more tutorials will be released.

Marcos is not only a marvellous watercolorist but also a wonderful teacher. And again, video and sound quality are superb. I highly recommend!

When I was a child, I dreamed of drawing and painting. I always felt emotional and had a lot to express, so watercolor made that possible in its fluidity and delicacy. We almost never have the opportunity to get to know the work and genius of an artist like Marcos, so having been able to experience this moment is something surreal and rewarding for me, because, coming from a humble family in the city of São Paulo, we don't always believe that our dreams are valid and possible to come true, so I am immensely grateful for the opportunity. Thanks to Professor Marcos and especially to Art Escape for ensuring that art is always available to everyone in a democratic and inclusive way.
